What is pTau 217?
pTau 217 is a protein measurable in the blood that reflects one of the strongest known blood-based biomarkers associated with Alzheimer's disease pathology. A pTau 217 blood test measures the level of this protein as part of a broader clinical picture of brain health, alongside other diagnostic tools your doctor may use.
Does a positive pTau 217 result mean I have Alzheimer's disease?
No. pTau 217 is one important biological signal, not a standalone diagnosis. No single test, blood-based or otherwise, can diagnose Alzheimer's disease on its own. The results of the test need to be interpreted together in your personalised context, such as your broader medical history, any symptoms, and other risk factors to help guide further diagnostic or prevention action.
How is a pTau 217 blood test different from a PET scan or spinal tap?
Amyloid PET and tau PET brain imaging, and lumbar puncture to test cerebrospinal fluid, have traditionally been the main routine laboratory tests and diagnostic tools used to understand this kind of Alzheimer's-related biological signal. Both are more invasive and less accessible than a blood draw. pTau 217 testing brings a similar kind of insight into a standard, doctor-reviewed blood test.
Who is the pTau 217 blood test for?
The pTau 217 blood test is available for members aged 55 and over.
How do I find out if I'm eligible for pTau 217 testing?
An Everlab doctor reviews your eligibility before your sample is taken, and if you're not eligible, you're refunded in full.
What happens after I pay?
You'll be asked to complete a dedicated questionnaire, including the Cognitive Function Instrument, a standardised check-in that gives you and your doctor a baseline read on your cognitive function alongside your test result. An Everlab doctor reviews your questionnaire. If eligible, they'll order the test; if not, you'll be refunded in full.
